CHAPTER 17

SUMMER

I padded downstairs to get coffee with a ridiculous smile on my face. Dad sat at the table and eyed me suspiciously.

“So...how was your night?” he asked through a mouthful of cereal. He was always eating. I don’t know how we ever had any food in the house. I poured coffee into my cup, shrugging as Mom walked into the room.

“Yeah, Summer, how was your night?” Mom purred as I glanced up briefly. She was beaming, her eyes sparkling mischievously. They were both studying me, waiting patiently.

For what?

I raised my eyebrows, stirring cream into my coffee.

“Uh, good?” I offered as they exchanged a look.

“Did you sleep well?” Mom asked, pushing her lips together to stop herself from laughing.

What the hell is going on?!

Dad shook his head as he pointed the finger at me, his eyes darkening.

“You’re lucky, I like him.”

My stomach dropped, and my blood ran cold as he raised his eyebrows at me briefly, shooting me a dazzling smile.

How did I ever think I would get this past Dad?

The man was like an animal—he had senses humans shouldn’t possess.

I stared at the table, my cheeks reddening as I remembered Gabe’s lips on mine.

“Honey, it’s okay,” Mom soothed, her gaze softening as she smiled. “We’ve known for a long time.”

Dad sipped his coffee, his green eyes locking with mine.

Known for a long time?

How?

Impossible—we only realized how we felt for each other last night!

Dad slid his hand around Mom’s waist as she kissed his head lovingly.

“Make sure you’re using protection. I’m not being a fucking grandad at this age,” Dad declared.

I choked on my coffee, and Mom bit her lip as she stifled another laugh.

“I don’t know what you are talking about,” I murmured, flushing beet red, trying desperately to look away.

“Gabriel,” smirked Dad. I groaned as I slid onto the stool opposite him, sighing as I rested my head on my hand.

“Are you going to shoot him?” I joked as he tilted his head, pretending to consider it.

“No, he isn’t.” Mom nudged him.

“No, I like him. Suppose you like him-even better. Put it this way; if I could have picked someone for you, it would’ve been him. He’s a good guy, Summer.” His voice had softened, and I smiled.

Mom clapped her hands together. “What took you both so damn long? I lost.”

I looked at her in confusion as Dad howled, holding his hand out.

“Fifty bucks, baby. I told you my girl would be hard to get.”

My mouth fell open as I gaped at them.

“You made a bet on me? For real? What’s wrong with you?!” I couldn’t help but laugh as they exchanged a sheepish look. “Honestly, as parents, you two—”

The front door boomed open, cutting me off.

“Hey, Summer, guess who I found on the porch,” drawled Caleb as I shot a worried look at my parents. Dad pretended to zip his lips shut as Mom frowned towards the door.

I did not want Caleb to find out about me and Gabe—not when we didn’t even know what we were ourselves.
